LOpSoc 2016 Summer show, performed from the 8th to the 11th of June 2016 at the Annex Theatre.

Marco and Giuseppe are two merry republican Venetian gondoliers, recently engaged to Gianetta and Tessa. What is their surprise when, right after their wedding, the Spanish inquisitor Don Alhambra shows up and reveals that one of them is no other than the King of Barataria!

The inquisitor stole the baby prince from Barataria many years ago and brought him to be raised by a gondolier in Venice. Said gondolier died when Marco and Giuseppe were younger, and now the only person who can identify the true King is Inez, the lady who nursed the royal baby back in Barataria. Now with the death of the former King, it is imperative that Marco and Giuseppe leave immediately and assume the throne as one individual. There is only one little problem: ladies are not allowed in the court of Barataria, and so Gianetta and Tessa must remain in Venice...

That, in fact, is just an excuse made up by Don Alhambra. The truth is, the prince of Barataria was married in infancy to Casilda, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro. Casilda herself didn't know about her husband, and is desolate when her parents tell her the truth. She is secretly in love with Luiz, her father's servant, and now her dreams seem more impossible than ever before...

Are the gondoliers going to succeed in bringing their republican ideals to Barataria? What will happen when Gianetta and Tessa find out that either Marco or Giuseppe was already married to Casilda? Will the Plaza-Toros regain their status and fortune? Will Don Alhambra find Inez and finally solve this confusion?

Love, gondolas, political ideals, mistaken identities and all the classic G&S plot tweaks and twists meet in the Annex Theatre!
Fiddler on the Roof was performed by LOpSoc from the 10th-13th February 2016 in the Annex Theatre. The show featured a record cast size of more than 43 individuals.

Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevye, a poor milkman living in 1905 Tsarist Russia, in the village of Anatevka with his wife and five daughters. Tevye is challenged by the changing of traditions that are taking place in his family, as his three eldest daughters choose to marry for love, rather than have a husband picked for them. The show also follows Tevye and the other villagers within Anatevka's Jewish community, as they are forced to cope increasing persecution they are facing from the non-Jewish community and the Russian authorities.

The show received glowing reviews from The Daily Echo, The Soton Tab and The Edge.
Iolanthe was performed by LOpSoc in August 2015 at the 22nd International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, following its successful run in Southampton earlier in 2015.

One of LOpSoc's more radical productions, this was a modernisation of the G&S operetta, updated to 1982 and gender-swapped.

The production followed the success of Pirates of Penzance 2014 (Harrogate), Iolanthe went on to win 3 awards: Best Director, Best Costumes and Best Character Actress.
Critical Reception
H.M.S Pinafore was well received garnering a 5 star review from the Soton Tab.

It received Curtain Call nominations for Jennifer Riggs Performance as Josephine (Best Performance in an Opera) as well as for both Directors (Best Director of a Musical or Opera).

Fresher Legends
Tales of frozen peas and PINA4 golden sequin tops are rife with this show. Also the infamous motto: "If its good enough to be in the matinee its good enough for the evening"

Biography
Renata is someone with an everlasting passion for choral singing and no formal music education. Has been involved in every LOpSoc production between 2014 and 2017. Webmaster for the society in 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18, was also the person who started the LOpSoc tradition of vocal workshops, leading them between 2015 and 2017.

Additional roles in the society include: producer in H.M.S. Pinafore 2015; musical director in Gondoliers 2016 and Gondoliers 2016 (Harrogate); head producer & choreographer in Mikado 2017 and award-winning Mikado 2017 (Harrogate); technical crew for Half a Sixpence 2017, remote graphic artist in Princess Ida 2019, and remote director in Double Feature 2021. Has also received the society's Professor Lilley award (2016) and Life Membership award (2017) for her contributions to the society.

After graduating from the society, could often be found lurking in the the back of the Annex with the LOpSoc camera on Saturday performances. However, 2020/21 held something else in store. With the society going online for the year, Renata returned remotely, arranging and rehearsing a "chorus react" medley of songs from G&S operettas (you can listen to it here). Also directed and edited the remote Double Feature 2021, which resulted in audio-drama recordings of Cox and Box and The Carp. You can listen to those here (link placeholder).

A fitting encore and farewell to the society. LOpSoc was a welcoming family in a strange place, and Renata will forever treasure the memories and friends made here.

Useless trivia
Holds the society record of "largest time spent preparing a pointless joke for a production", having spent two months painting a massive portrait of the Baratarian Kings for Gondoliers 2016 that was visible on stage for just a few seconds. Another notable society record is the "largest amount of time spent crafting set decoration", with the months-long origami folding for the productions of Mikado 2017 and its Harrogate counterpart.

A Saxon kingdom and Viking settlement are on the brink of war. The only way to ease the tensions looks to be the marriage of Prince Hilarion and Princess Ida, the heirs to those great powers. But on the day they were due to meet, news arrives the Ida has renounced all men and has formed a women's university. Before tensions can rise further, Hilarion gathers his friends and, posing as female students, infiltrates the college to try and woo Ida back.

LOpSoc performed Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Princess Ida' in the Annex Theatre, 2019. The devised concept was that of medieval England, with those from the court of Hildebrand becoming Saxons, and those of Gama becoming Vikings. Varying alterations were made to the libretto and score to accommodate for this and Ida herself became a shieldmaiden.

About the Show
"Princess Ida is a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta that makes a foray into the realms of poetry - based on The Princess, a narrative poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, it is the pair’s only operetta written entirely in blank verse. Unfortunately the show was not considered a contemporary success, but LOpSOc intend to rectify that with their ambitious reimagining of the action in Early Medieval England with an Anglo-Saxon prince and a Viking princess whose father, Gama, is the Jarl of a Viking settlement, seeking to increase his influence by marrying into Hildebrand’s royal line.

An exciting and funny operetta, Princess Ida is making a comeback into the LOpSoc repertoire after nine years since its last performance. With beautiful musical numbers and a wide array of personalities composing its principal characters and chorus, this is a unique show in both the G&S collection and in LOpSoc’s.

We hope you enjoy the performance today and look forward to seeing you again for LOpSoc’s future shows!"

The Mikado was performed by LOpSoc on 10th August 2017 in the Harrogate Savoy Theatre at the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. The orchestra and stage crew were provided by the venue. The origami children concept was imported to the Mikado 2017 Production in the Nuffield. However, with a new Katisha in Abby Pardoe and the role of James (Isaac Treuherz) being changed to Lily (Katie Giles), new direction opportunities presented themselves, with more interaction between Katisha, Lily and Wendy.

The production was very well received at the festival. The adjudicator of the UniFest awards said the following about the show: 'I am not given to hyperbole, but I think I can say with honesty that this Mikado is the best show I have seen during the entire life of the UniFest. Everyone involved with it deserves enormous congratulation and credit.'

LOpSoc was crowned champions of the competition, winning the Best Performance award. George Smith and Billy Boulton won Best Direction, and David Child and Liam Chan won Best Musical Direction. Philip Needle received a nomination for Best Male Voice; Barnaby Wilson and Ben Walker received nominations for Best Character Actor; Joe Hand received a nomination for Best Male Performer. The society was also nominated for the Best Chorus award.

LOpSoc brings to the Nuffield Theatre a fresh and unique production of “The Mikado”, one of the most loved and best lasting Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. With a new aesthetic twist and setting, witty libretto and gorgeous music, this is a production to please newcomers and G&S fans alike.

Gilbert found all of the reference material he needed within a mile of his own home in South Kensington. From the Japanese Village in Knightsbridge, a male dancer and a tea-girl were permitted to give their services to the Savoy management. The dancer was not only polite and refined, but also an accomplished linguist. The tea-girl was responsible for teaching the ladies Japanese deportment: how to walk, run or dance in as tiny and graceful steps as possible, and how to spread and snap the fan to express different emotions.

Therefore, the original production portrayed an exaggerated, yet somehow faithful, image of Japan from an English perspective at that time. In present day, the operetta has sometimes been considered to play too much on stereotypes. However, Gilbert \& Sullivan's intention was only to seek in an exotic setting an opportunity to build a clever and fun critique of their very own English politics and society.

From its inception The Mikado has been heavily based in pure imagination, as Gilbert had never been to Japan himself. It is exactly there where we set our version of this story: in an imaginary world. Already in the overture we meet Wendy, James and Peter, three friends who are folding origami together. They soon start to name their toys and create a world and story for each one of them - the story of The Mikado. As the plot progresses we also learn more about each child's personality; of Wendy's sensitivity and romantic view of the world, Peter's wit and playfulness, and James' stubbornness and sometimes overbearing attitude.

The tale begins when the three children decide to fold origami figures. They play with their creations, naming each one and imagining a story for them. However they don't always agree on the course of the plot...

Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado, fled the imperial court to escape marriage with Katisha. Disguised, he falls in love with Yum-Yum, who is already betrothed to her guardian Ko-Ko, the soft-hearted Lord High Executioner of Titipu. Nanki-Poo is devastated, but in a secret meeting with Yum-Yum he confesses his love, revealing his true identity and the reason why he ran away. Meanwhile, the Mikado sends a letter demanding that an execution is carried out within a month, otherwise Titipu will lose its privileges. Ko-Ko comes up with an ingenious plan after finding out that Nanki-Poo, in his heart-broken misery, has decided to commit suicide. Since he is decided to die, Nanki-Poo should volunteer to be publicly executed instead, thus solving the issue of how to fulfil the Emperor's order. In exchange, Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum can be married for a month prior to his execution. However, Katisha discovers Nanki-Poo's whereabouts, and is not at all willing to let him go... Intersecting love triangles, political intrigue, disguised identities and origami meet in Titipu.
"The Gondoliers" was LOpSoc's 2016 Summer Show, and was also performed at the International G&S Festival on August 17th in Harrogate. Four of our cast members have been nominated for the UniFest 2016 Awards: Sophie Brant (best character actress), Billy Boulton (best character actor), Barnaby Wilson (best character actor) and Amber Courage (best costumes).

Love, gondolas, political ideals, mistaken identities and all the classic G&S plot tweaks and twists meet in Harrogate this Summer!

Holds the society record of "largest time spent preparing a pointless joke for a production", having spent two months painting a massive portrait of the Baratarian Kings for Gondoliers 2016 that was visible on stage for just a few seconds.
